DESCRIPTION
If you're a collector of vintage 70s soul-jazz vinyl, chances are high that the unmistakable voice of Dee Dee Bridgewater already graces your shelves. A pivotal figure during that era, her vocals seamlessly tied together the works of Roy Ayers, Norman Connors, Billy Parker, and Carlos Garnett, among others. Though primarily known for her jazz excellence, Dee Dee's career spans a wide spectrum — from soul and gospel to Broadway and underground disco — marking her as one of the most versatile and enduring voices in modern music.
With Afro Blue, Mr Bongo takes listeners back to the very beginning of Dee Dee’s solo journey. Originally recorded in Tokyo in 1974 and released exclusively in Japan, this debut album has become a coveted deep soul-jazz treasure. We’ve chosen to reissue it using the artwork from the original Trio Records release — a stunning piece of music history finally made accessible once again.
The record features a stellar cross-cultural ensemble of American and Japanese musicians, including Cecil & Ron Bridgewater, the legendary drummer Motohiko Hino, and producer Takao Ishizuka. Together, they crafted an album that transcends borders, merging soul, jazz, and spiritual energy into something entirely unique.
Highlights include the stunning title track “Afro Blue”, Dee Dee’s deeply expressive take on “People Make The World Go Round”, and a radiant interpretation of Norman Connors' “Love From The Sun”. There's also a rich “Blues Medley” and a blissful version of Bobby Hutcherson’s “Little B’s Poem” that further elevate the set.
Afro Blue is a deeply evocative listen — heartfelt, spiritual, and musically sophisticated. It’s a must-have for jazz lovers, soul collectors, and anyone who appreciates the early brilliance of a vocal legend.
