DESCRIPTION
Atlantis is a smouldering jazz-funk, cinematic excursion from Brazilian conductor, pianist, arranger, and producer Daniel Salinas. A prolific figure in Brazil’s vibrant music scene of the 1960s and '70s, Salinas worked across a variety of genres including the Beatles-inspired Jovem Guarda, jazz-funk, and MPB (Música Popular Brasileira). His credits include collaborations with luminaries such as Franco, Célia, Perfume Azul Do Sol, Wilson Simonal, and Juca Chaves, among others.
Originally released in 1973 on Top Tape Records, Atlantis showcases Salinas’ exceptional skill at reimagining classics while infusing them with rich Brazilian textures and orchestral finesse. The standout moment is undoubtedly ‘Straussmania’, a cosmic jazz-funk take on Also Sprach Zarathustra that channels the spirit of Eumir Deodato’s global hit from the same year. This interpretation quickly became a cult classic across rare groove scenes, a prized find for breakbeat collectors and DJ crate-diggers alike.
Elsewhere on the album, Salinas offers a deep and lush reworking of Donovan’s ‘Atlantis’, complete with head-nod breakbeats and cinematic strings. The only original track on the album, ‘Baião’, is a driving Brazilian jazz-funk masterpiece that reflects Salinas’ roots and rhythmic flair. Additional interpretations, such as ‘Bridge Over Troubled Waters’ and ‘Like A Rainy Night’, reveal his talent for transforming well-known melodies into evocative, genre-blending soundscapes.
While a version of Atlantis was issued by the U.S. label Cadet in 1974 with alternate yellow sleeve artwork, this Mr Bongo reissue faithfully replicates the original 1973 Brazilian Top Tape release, preserving the album’s authentic visual and musical essence.
