DESCRIPTION

Originally released in tandem with Black Mahogani back in 2004, Black Mahogani II is one of Kenny Dixon Jr.'s most elusive and singular releases. Pressed in extremely limited numbers and never reissued, this rare gem diverges from Moodymann’s usual deep house foundations—offering instead a raw, hypnotic dive into live jazz experimentation infused with the soul of Detroit techno.

The centerpiece of the EP is the monumental 18-minute version of “When She Follows”—a sprawling composition built from live drum rolls, murmuring Fender Rhodes chords, upright bass, and spectral saxophone. Ethereal and boundless, the track unfolds like a late-night jam session haunted by the spirit of Gil Scott-Heron and reshaped through the lens of Detroit futurism.

“Rectify” continues the journey with a jazz-laced groove filtered through a minimalist techno aesthetic—loose, abstract, yet emotionally grounded. The B-side delivers two deep reworks: “Dirty Little Bonus Beats” strips things down to rhythm, breath, and dubby variations of the original motif, while “When She (Reprise)” picks up the tempo with warped synths and a hypnotic, techno-tinged pulse.

Black Mahogani II is not just a companion to the original—it’s a revelation. A deep, genre-blurring statement of intent from one of electronic music’s most visionary voices.
