DESCRIPTION
Good friends and Record Mission co-captains Dan Tyler (one half of the Idjut Boys) and Nick The Record take the helm for Volume 3 of the Mr Bongo Edits 12" series. Following in the footsteps of previous editions by Danny Krivit and Luke Una, Dan and Nick turn their attention to a carefully selected trio of iconic ‘70s Cuban recordings, reimagining them for today’s dancefloors with dubbed-out flair and psychedelic finesse.
On the A side, Dan Tyler delivers two edits from the catalog of Cuban trombonist and composer Juan Pablo Torres, pulled from Mr Bongo’s recent reissue campaign of Torres’ legendary Algo Nuevo and Super Son LPs. On the B side, Nick The Record digs into his vault to unleash a long-gestating re-edit of Grupo Los Yoyi, refreshed for 2025 with added synth wizardry from Dan.
Dan reflects:
“Having been caught under an avalanche of good music from Mr Bongo, I took it upon myself to extend and add effects to a couple of the fantastic tracks from the Juan Pablo Torres LPs they recently re-issued. Just for disco jockey and barn dance use.”
Track Highlights:
-
‘Cacao (Dan Tyler NAD Bulto Versión)’ – Taken from Algo Nuevo (1978), this rework opens up the original's scatting vocal lines and percussive climax. A cosmic journey of dubbed synths and swirling FX, it evokes the club power of George Kranz’s Din Daa Daa with deep Latin-funk roots. Tested to explosive effect at La Paloma in Barcelona.
-
‘Pastel En Descarga (Dan Tyler NAD Pepino Versión)’ – From Super Son (1977), this psych-Latin-funk gem gets a dubbed makeover. Dan extends the breaker-funk intro, drenches it in reverb and delay, and shapes it into a cosmic-funk heater built for late-night excursions.
-
‘Paco La Calle (Nick The Record Re-Edit)’ – Originally edited in 2009, this 2025 version doubles the length of the original Grupo Los Yoyi track from 1977. With driving percussion, rising synth layers, and Dan’s new additions woven into the mix, it’s a masterclass in tension and release — a true dancer’s weapon.
This is a cosmic whirlwind of Cuban soul and disco science, recast with modern energy and deep respect for the source. A must for DJs, selectors, and lovers of deep rhythm alike.
