DESCRIPTION
Originally released in 1980, Ebo Taylor’s ‘Conflict’ stands as one of the finest examples of Ghanaian afro-funk and is now seeing a long-overdue reissue on Mr Bongo, following its partial remake on Taylor’s 2009 album Love and Death. This five-track gem exemplifies Taylor’s innovative approach to merging traditional Ghanaian highlife with funk grooves and politically infused lyricism, steering the genre into fresh, progressive territories.
The album kicks off with ‘You Need Love’, a catchy highlife number full of infectious chants, horn riffs and shimmering guitar licks. The tone quickly shifts into funkier realms with the extended groove of ‘Love and Death’ and the flute-infused ‘What Is Life?’, which features a deeper, more meditative rhythm. ‘Christ Will Come’ is a standout moment, a brilliantly orchestrated apocalyptic funk jam underpinned by a powerful percussive drive and heralding themes of judgment and redemption. The record closes on a spiritual high with ‘Victory’, a call for global unity built on a traditional Asafo rhythm, where a driving groove is matched by a rich brass section and celebratory energy.
With Taylor’s masterful arrangements and themes that balance personal introspection with universal calls for love and unity, Conflict remains a vital touchstone in Ghana’s musical history. Funk-laden and thought-provoking, this is an album that commands attention, both on the dancefloor and in the soul.
