DESCRIPTION
Taken from Crooked Man’s forthcoming, future-facing remix album Crooked Transmissions, Mr Bongo, in partnership with Luke Una’s É Soul Cultura, proudly presents two standout reworks on this heavy-hitting 12-inch release: ‘Everything (Gone Crooked)’ and ‘My Shadow (Crooked Shade)’.
A revered figure in UK dance music since the late ‘80s, Sheffield-born Crooked Man (aka Richard Barratt) helped define the bleep techno era with his groundbreaking 1989 release as Sweet Exorcist alongside Richard H. Kirk, issued via Warp Records. Over the decades, Barratt has built an extensive catalogue under monikers like Parrot, Earth Angel, and Athletes of God, with releases on DFA and remixes for artists such as Róisín Murphy, JIM, and Joe Goddard.
Here, Crooked Man reimagines two tracks from Transmission Towers’ critically acclaimed debut album Transmission One, injecting each with his signature sonic alchemy.
On the A side, ‘Everything (Gone Crooked)’ takes the original post-punk guitar-led composition and mutates it into a cybertronic new beat stormer. Driven by pulsating percussion, rumbling kicks, and a searing synth-line, this rework is a heady, Afrofuturist trip designed to ignite any dancefloor. Eleanor Mante’s vocals are pulled into a kaleidoscopic vortex, twisting with hypnotic tension and psychedelic intensity.
The B side, ‘My Shadow (Crooked Shade)’, is no less potent. What began as hallucinatory machine soul is flipped into an intoxicating, club-ready breaker with galactic impact. Crunchy breakbeats propel the track through a nebula of spiralling pads and astral synths, while Eleanor’s ethereal vocals orbit in a mesmerising loop of cosmic propulsion.
Already receiving high praise across the board:
Sean Johnston – A Love From Outer Space: “It’s no secret that Crooked Man is one of the most important producers working in house music right now... certain to be regular fixtures at forthcoming ALFOS parties.”
Luke Solomon: “That’s wild. Love it.”
David Holmes: “Fabulous”
Test Pressing: “Channeling Sheffield metallic noise via the best of NYC.”
Crazy P: “Well juicy. Love both”
This 12" is a vital dispatch from the forward edge of club culture — and a testament to Crooked Man’s unrelenting creative force.
