DESCRIPTION
Master jazz pianist Tenorio Jr., also known as Francisco Tenório Júnior, recorded only one solo album in his lifetime—Embalo, originally released on RGE in 1964. A rare and revered piece of Brazilian jazz history, the record showcases Tenorio Jr.'s exquisite touch, melodic inventiveness, and rhythmic command.
Tragically, his story took a mysterious and heartbreaking turn. While on tour in Argentina with Toquinho and Vinicius de Moraes in 1976, Tenorio Jr. vanished. Rumours suggest he may have been arrested, imprisoned, and possibly murdered during the political unrest of the time. He has not been seen since.
Soon after his disappearance, filmmaker Rogerio Lima released a short documentary titled Balada para Tenorio, chronicling his life and sudden vanishing, featuring interviews with family and friends.
In addition to Embalo, Tenorio Jr. contributed to many iconic recordings. His piano playing on Gal Costa’s Pontos De Luz was famously sampled by Kaytranada on the track Lite Spots, bringing his legacy to a new generation of listeners.
A longtime favourite of tastemakers like Gilles Peterson and Floating Points, Embalo is a masterclass in soulful, elegant Brazilian jazz. We are proud to present this official reissue, complete with replica original artwork.
