DESCRIPTION
For the second instalment in the Mr Bongo Cuban Classics series, this sought-after slice of Afro-Cuban jazz brilliance from 1976 is proudly reissued: the self-titled masterpiece by Grupo Irakere. Founded in 1973 by Chucho Valdés—the son of Cuban piano legend Bebo Valdés—Irakere became one of the most innovative and influential acts to emerge from Cuba in the 20th century.

The band’s unique fusion of traditional Cuban music, jazz, funk, and rock captivated audiences and brought a new energy to Latin music. This album captures the group at an early peak, featuring an elite roster of Cuban musicians who helped shape the future of Afro-Cuban jazz.

The opening track, ‘Chequeré-Son’, is a standout favourite—an irresistible Latin-jazz funk anthem with fiery horn lines, jazzy electric keys, and a cool swagger steeped in ‘70s flair. From the groovy strut of ‘38 1/2’ to the explosive energy of ‘Juana 1600’, the album doesn’t let up. Tracks like ‘Xiomara’ are built for movement, blending sultry vocals with vibrant rhythms, while ‘Iya’ closes the album with percussive power and a Santana-like psychedelic edge.

Originally released on Cuba’s state-run Areito label, the album also reached international audiences through licensed releases in Finland, Italy, Mexico, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic, further spreading its Afro-Cuban magic.

Now finally reissued with replica artwork and OBI strip, this album is an Afro-Cuban jazz treasure that shines with passion, rhythm, and unmatched musicianship.
