DESCRIPTION
Mr Bongo is proud to present the official pressing of Guilherme Coutinho E O Grupo Stalo’s mythical self-titled album – a cult gem that blends lo-fi Brazilian tropicalia, jazz, funk, and MPB with effortless charm and character.
Originally released in 1978 on the obscure Belém-based label Erla - Estudio Rauland, the album is one of only two LPs ever issued by the label, which predominantly focused on 7” singles. Recorded far from Brazil’s major music industry hubs of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the album remained ultra-rare and highly elusive, even within Brazil. Its limited regional release, timeless quality, and unmistakable magic have made it a prized collector's item, fetching top prices on the rare vinyl market.
Fronted by the enigmatic Brazilian keyboardist and bandleader Guilherme Coutinho, this recording is one of only a handful associated with him before his untimely passing in 1983 at just 41 years old. The album also features the sweet, understated vocal tones of Elinho (Hélio Rubens de Oliveira), whose delivery recalls the delicate flair of indie acts like Belle & Sebastian. Musically, it is cinematic and soothing, full of quirky arrangements, playful rhythms, and a sense of musical freedom that sets it apart from contemporaries of the era.
From the dreamy opener 'Atalaia' to the delicate closing piece 'Tema Pro Alvarito', this album rewards start-to-finish listening as a complete artistic journey. A truly unique Brazilian treasure, now back in circulation and more accessible than ever thanks to Mr Bongo’s dedicated reissue series.
