For No. 93 in the signature Brazil 45’s series, Mr Bongo presents two standout favourites from São Paulo’s all-female vocal group Harmony Cats — a quintet (later trio) formed in 1976 and most prolific during Brazil’s disco era.
On the A side, ‘Harmony Cats’ Theme’ (1976) is arguably their most recognised track outside of Brazil. Heavily inspired by Rhythm Heritage’s take on ‘Barretta's Theme (Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow)’, the track fuses spacey breakbeats and crisp percussion with lush, floaty vocal harmonies. It’s a certified crossover classic, beloved by DJs and collectors for its distinct mix of funk and cosmic flair.
On the B side, ‘Seja Como Nós (De Pé No Chão)’ delivers a blast of unfiltered disco joy. Originally tucked away as the B-side to the group’s 1979 single ‘Tem Dinheiro Nisso’ on Young Records, it’s a powerhouse Brazilian rework of The Jacksons’ ‘Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)’.
