Luis Pérez was born in Mexico City on July 11, 1951. Beginning in 1971, he dedicated his life to researching the pre-Columbian instrumentation of Mesoamerica, a journey that took him across Mexico, immersing himself in the musical traditions of its indigenous peoples. Through direct learning from native communities, he gathered songs and instruments tied to the Maya, Nahuatl, Mazateco, Yoemem, Comcaac, Raramuri, Wixarika, and other cultures.
His collection includes ethnographic instruments still used by indigenous groups today, as well as archaeological artifacts over 2,000 years old. These are not relics for Pérez – he actively uses them in live performances, concerts, lectures, and recordings, ensuring that their voices are still heard and their cultural significance continues to thrive.
El Ombligo de la Luna is a deeply spiritual work – an offering to the world that bridges the ancient and the eternal. Through Luis Pérez Ixoneztli, the soul of Mexico resonates, crafted by the hands and heart of a master musician.
