Description
Melodi is the second full-length album from the captivating Anglo-Turkish duo Kit Sebastian (Kit Martin and Merve Erdem). Following their cult-favourite debut Mantra Moderne (2019), this new offering is a deeper, more diverse evolution of their unique sonic universe—where world music, jazz, psychedelia, and cinema-inspired textures all blur into a borderless musical language.
Rather than replicate the first record, Melodi presents a bold maturation. Its sound travels from the Italian Riviera to the Caucasus mountains, from the beaches of Bahia to the urban soul of Istanbul and Paris. Written during the first UK lockdown and recorded in the slower pace of that surreal summer, the duo used the moment to expand both their songwriting and studio experimentation.
The instrumentation is rich and varied—featuring zithers, harpsichords, congas, bongos, bulbul tarang, balalaikas, and a mock-up choir, layered with synths, organs, saxophones, and added trumpet and string sections. Still recorded using analogue tape machines and bouncing between cassette and ¼-inch tape, the album retains a raw warmth and spontaneity. Merve Erdem’s vocals draw heavily from the Turkish vocalists of her youth—adding darker, melancholic reflections rooted in late-night introspections.
More than an album, Melodi is a journey—blending vintage aesthetics with a contemporary voice. Each listen reveals new depths, from playful pop highs to dreamy cinematic lows. It is an album to fall in love with, over and over again.
