This edition turns the spotlight to two monster funk/bossa nova cuts from Rosa Maria, reissued as a double-header of firm favourites here at Mr Bongo HQ. Originally released on 7” in 1972 via Tapecar, original copies are now extremely hard to come by.
On the A side, ‘Deixa Não Deixa’ delivers a distinct Afro-Latin feel driven by rhythmic guitar, punchy horns, and layered percussion. Add in Rosa Maria’s irresistible lead vocal, rich harmonies, funk-meets-bossa grooves, and a dynamic build to the end — it’s a contender for one of the greatest Brazilian funk records ever pressed.
Flip to the B side for ‘Avenida Atlântica’, an energetic dancefloor heater. Funk and bossa drum patterns weave beneath vibrant layers of vocals, horns, piano, and percussion, creating a fiery, infectious groove built to move bodies.
