DESCRIPTION
Minas – Num Dia Azul is a sublime slice of private press bossa nova meets jazzy MPB perfection. Warm, fluid, and brimming with youthful exuberance, the album strikes a beautiful balance — loose in swagger yet tight in execution. Originally released in 1983, it embodies the rich musical spirit of Rio de Janeiro in that era, despite being recorded far from its shores — in North Carolina, USA.
The album was created by Patricia and Orlando Haddad, shortly after they graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts. It was released only in Brazil, on their self-run label Blueazul Records, in very limited quantities due to the high cost of pressing. Tragedy further added to its rarity — hundreds of copies were lost in a house fire.
Over time, however, the album gained a mythical status. By the 2010s, word of its magic began spreading among DJs and collectors worldwide, with many reaching out to the Haddads in hopes of securing a copy. Fortunately, the original tapes survived, and in 2016, a successful Kickstarter campaign enabled the album to be remastered and repressed.
For the Mr Bongo 2023 reissue, great care has been taken to honour the original 1983 version, from the packaging to the audio fidelity. The CD edition also includes bonus tracks.
An essential listen for fans of Burnier & Cartier, Edu Lobo, and Joyce, Num Dia Azul is a gentle, immersive journey into a breezy and richly textured soundscape — one that will undoubtedly continue to enchant new generations of Brazilian music lovers.
