DESCRIPTION
An incredibly original collection of 'Brazilian Nuggets' from the Mocambo/Rozenblit catalogue, Os Canibais is a standout album from one of Brazil’s earliest and most inventive pop-rock groups.
Os Canibais (The Cannibals) burst onto the scene in 1964, emerging from Rio de Janeiro with a sharp sound and a sharper name — originally considering “The Drunks” before opting for a more distinctive Portuguese moniker. This decision intentionally set them apart from the Jovem Guarda TV-era bands who favoured English names like The Fevers or The Jordans.
The band was initially formed by Aramis (guitar/vocals), Serginho, and Max (vocals), later joined by Denise Baker (vocals) and Horacio (piano). They were signed by Jonas Silva, A&R at Mocambo, and their first single sold over 100,000 copies, breaking into the Top 10 and establishing them as a pop force to be reckoned with.
In 1966, Os Canibais made history as the first Brazilian pop-rock group to perform with a live orchestra on TV — a bold move at a time when playback performances were still the norm.
Their only full-length release as Os Canibais captures a mix of beat-pop, garage soul, and early psych-tinged rock, with unique Brazilian flair. They would later release a follow-up album under the name Bango, which pushed deeper into psychedelic territory, drawing comparisons to Os Mutantes.
This Mr Bongo reissue unearths a long-overlooked gem of Brazil's 1960s musical counterculture — a vibrant, genre-hopping album that still sounds fresh and adventurous today.
