DESCRIPTION
"I’m an afrobeat drummer but Pat Thomas is highlife. That is what he does so well." – Tony Allen
A true gem of Ghanaian music, Pat Thomas Introduces Marijata is a seminal 1976 album that fuses highlife, reggae, folk, funk, and soul, all elevated by the powerful voice of legendary vocalist Pat Thomas. Originally released on Gapophone Records, this official Mr Bongo reissue faithfully replicates the original artwork and brings the album back to life for new generations of listeners.
Marijata was a trio of Kofi 'Electric' Addison on drums, Bob Fischlan on organ, and Nat Osmanu on guitar. Together with Pat Thomas, they created a sound that was both rich in West African roots and forward-thinking in its global sonic influences.
Pat Thomas began his musical journey in 1969 with the Broadway Dance Band, before moving through the Uhuru Dance Band, Ebo Taylor’s Blue Monks, and eventually forming Sweet Beans in 1973. That group’s 1974 release False Lover established his name. When Sweet Beans split and reformed as Marijata, they released the self-titled Marijata album, followed by this powerful collaboration.
With a career spanning over 50 years, Pat Thomas continues to tour worldwide, and this album stands as a testament to his enduring legacy and influence.
