DESCRIPTION

The Star Beams album is a bit of an enigma. When Mr Bongo first came across the explosive dancefloor cut ‘Disco Stomp’ via a Disco Calypso compilation, it was assumed to be a Caribbean gem. Years later, it was discovered that this ultra-rare nugget actually hails from South Africa, originally released in 1976 on the obscure JAS Pride label. Tracking down a copy was no small feat — and few moments have matched the joy of our own Gary Johnson turning up to the office with an original in hand.

The album, Play Disco Specials, was produced by Ray Nkwe, a key figure who also worked with Mankunku Quartet and The Soul Jazzmen. All songs are credited to Ray, with Robin Ritchie listed as the recording engineer and Carol Knowles credited for the album’s artwork. Beyond these details, the musicians behind the record remain unknown — but sometimes, a little mystery adds to the magic.

The record’s standout ‘Disco Stomp’ has become a DJ favourite, famously worked into sets by Theo Parrish. But the album holds more: a blend of disco, jazz, and funk that places The Star Beams alongside their South African contemporaries like The Drive, Batsumi, and Pacific Express.

A hidden gem from the height of 1970s South Africa’s vibrant music scene, Play Disco Specials is finally getting the wider appreciation it deserves.
