DESCRIPTION

Mr Bongo proudly presents a 7-inch reissue of this mythical, raw funk rarity from Miami-based Cuban rock band Pearly Queen. Featuring the infectious, highly sought-after ‘Quit Jive’ In’ and a blistering cover of The Rascals' ‘Jungle Walk’, this double-header delivers a pure blast of mid-’70s funk fire.

Originally released in 1974 on Sound Triangle Records — the imprint founded by Cuban record producer Manuel J. Mato, who emigrated to the U.S. in 1960 — this elusive funk gem has long held holy grail status among collectors and DJs. It came to Mr Bongo’s attention through tastemakers like Keb Darge and Jazzman Gerald in the 1990s and gained further acclaim when it appeared on DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist’s iconic 7" mix Brainfreeze. Shadow also sampled the break from ‘Quit Jive’ In’ — its drums and horns forming the backbone of ‘The Number Song’ from his groundbreaking Endtroducing….. LP on Mo Wax.

Written by Ray Fernandez of Ray & His Court fame, ‘Quit Jive’ In’ is a swaggering funk monster, oozing with groove, heavy breaks, and punchy brass. On the B side, ‘Jungle Walk’ is a raucous rock-funk rendition of The Rascals’ 1972 original — written by guitarist Buzzy Feiten — and would sit perfectly on a Tarantino soundtrack.

With original copies of the 7” elusive even to the most seasoned diggers, this reissue finally brings an essential funk classic back to the forefront — one that deserves to be heard, played, and cherished.
