DESCRIPTION
Amazones de Guinee - Samba
Amazones de Guinee kick off the series with Samba, an electrifying piece of live African funk recorded in Paris in 1983. With powerful vocals and high-energy grooves, this track captures the pure essence of the African music scene. Amazones de Guinee, Guinea's first all-female group, was formed by members of the Guinean army. Their lead percussionist, Kade Diallo, tragically passed away in a car crash just days after returning from a tour of France in the early 80s. Although the group did not record again until 2008, they continue to tour to this day, captivating a new generation of fans. Samba comes from their sought-after 1983 album Au Coeur De Paris, and was previously unreleased on 7”.
Moussa Doumbia - Samba
On the B-side, we have Samba by Moussa Doumbia, born in Mali and a prolific saxophonist, composer, and arranger based in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Fusing African rhythms with Funk, his style can be compared to the likes of Fela Kuti, Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou, and Ebo Taylor. Moussa’s vocal delivery is reminiscent of the legendary James Brown. In the same vein as Fela, he played at the Boule Noire club in the cosmopolitan Treichville area of Abidjan, where he performed his unique fusion of sounds for hours every night. Samba comes from his extremely hard-to-find 1980 LP Lassissi Presente Moussa Doumbia released on Sacodis.
