For the first time in forty-five years, Skull Snaps' self-titled debut is widely available once again, featuring one of the most iconic sample breaks in history – the timeless “It’s A New Day.” This official Mr Bongo reissue brings a crucial piece of funk history back to life.
The creation myth of Skull Snaps is as fascinating as their music. A mysterious funk trio, they recorded just one album under a name that seemed to signal mystery and intrigue. Their album was released by GSF Records, a label that folded shortly after, and housed in a sleeve more akin to a proto-metal album, which only deepened the mystery. Despite its obscurity, Skull Snaps became a totemic object for collectors, with its elusive nature setting the stage for its rediscovery nearly twenty-five years later.
The album’s mystique was only enhanced by the use of its iconic tracks in hip-hop, leading to a strong mythos that was crucial to the reputations of those who sampled it. The 1995 unsanctioned reissue on Charley Records compounded the mystery by removing credits, further severing the album from its context. Nevertheless, as Amir Abdullah once wrote, “If you don't have Skull Snaps in your collection, your collection is weak.”
This reissue also includes sleeve notes by Anton Spice, offering insight into the album's history. Licensed from Sam Culley, this is the ultimate opportunity for fans new and old to experience one of the most influential albums in funk history.
