Juan Pablo Torres, a master trombonist, arranger, and bandleader, directed both Algo Nuevo and the esteemed Estrellas De Areito ensemble. Alongside his work with these legendary groups, he recorded extensively for Cuba’s state-run label Areito/EGREM, leaving a rich legacy of adventurous music.
During the post-revolution era in Cuba, while certain styles were censored, many professional musicians enjoyed government sponsorship—resulting in an explosion of sonic experimentation throughout the 1970s and '80s. Super Son is a shining example of this creative freedom.
Opening with “Y Que Bien,” the album dives headfirst into cosmic, psychedelic territory. With skatting vocals, swirling guitar textures and joyful funk rhythms, the track immediately sets the tone for a wild ride. “Pastel En Descarga” elevates the energy further—distorted guitar lines mesh with jubilant horns and propulsive percussion in a dynamic, ever-building arrangement.
Elsewhere, tracks like “Con Aji Guaguao” embrace a funk-inflected 1970s TV theme feel, driven by Juan Pablo Torres’ blistering trombone performance. “Son A Propulsión” and “Son Riendo” continue the exploratory spirit—blending traditional Cuban rhythms with swirling jazz-funk and experimental flourishes, from layered horns to spacey guitar interplay.
