DESCRIPTION

Another super rare gem from the Rozenblit catalogue, The Gentlemen’s self-titled album from 1972 is a Brazilian psych-rock obscurity of the highest order. Originally released on the Smog Records imprint, only 200 copies of the LP were ever pressed — exclusively for radio promotion — and today, just three known original copies are confirmed to exist.

Formed in 1966 by Hugo Leão (real name Hugo Filho), The Gentlemen were a garage-rock band hailing from Pernambuco, in northeast Brazil. Drawing heavy inspiration from the Jovem Guarda scene and 1960s UK psych-rock, their sound fused global influences with local flavors. The band featured Hugo Leão (bass, vocals), Célio (rhythm guitar), Valmir (lead vocals), Saulo (drums), Enilton (guitar), and Carlito (keyboards).

The album kicks off with ‘Sorriso Selvagem’, a wild mix of Santana-style grooves and Deep Purple-style riffs. Elsewhere, the standout single ‘Christina’ (not featured on the LP but associated with the band’s era) merges psychedelic textures with Pernambucan percussion, Indian sitars, and Moroccan lutes, showcasing their adventurous spirit.

This reissue brings a long-lost piece of Brazil’s underground psychedelic rock history back into the light, offering a glimpse into one of the country’s most mysterious and musically daring regional acts.
