DESCRIPTION
Released in 2016 on International Anthem Recording Co., The New Breed is a landmark album from multi-instrumentalist, producer, and Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker. The project weaves together a wide spectrum of influences—from jazz and soul to experimental hip-hop and beat music—into a cohesive, forward-thinking sound that reflects Parker’s deep history in Chicago’s post-rock and jazz scenes.
Originally composed as a tribute to Parker’s late father (who once owned a clothing store called “The New Breed” in Bridgeport, Connecticut), the album is as emotionally resonant as it is sonically innovative. Parker blends live guitar improvisation with MPC-driven beat construction, fusing live instrumentation, looped samples, and vocal elements in a way that recalls the collage techniques of Madlib or J Dilla, but with the harmonic richness and phrasing of a seasoned jazz musician.
With contributions from fellow Chicago stalwarts like Makaya McCraven (drums), Josh Johnson (alto sax, Wurlitzer), and others, The New Breed is introspective yet rhythmically infectious, experimental yet warmly accessible. It’s a bold exploration of genre-blending jazz that helped set the tone for a new era of improvised music.
Classic Black 140g LP inside a heavyweight reverse-board jacket with 16-page insert booklet (new for IA11, with additional photos, new liner notes written by New Breed bassist / co-producer Paul Bryan, and an in-depth conversation between JP and IARC co-founder Scott McNiece), IARC 2025 obi strip and printed poly-lined printed innersleeve. Pressed at Pallas in Germany, with lacquers cut by Daniel K at SST.
