Animal Records — founded by Chris Stein of Blondie fame — only ever released one album during its brief early-80s run. But what an album it was. The Wild Style soundtrack remains the most seminal and definitive hip-hop soundtrack in history — a raw, vibrant snapshot of a culture just beginning its evolution from street corners and block parties to recording studios and global stages.

It’s more than just a historical document — it’s a wildly engaging, exhilarating listen. The line-up is a who’s who of foundational hip-hop talent: Rodney Cee and KK Rockwell as Double Trouble, the ever-energetic Chief Rocker Busy Bee, the powerhouse crews Cold Crush Brothers and Fantastic Freaks, and turntable pioneers like Grand Wizard Theodore and Charlie Chase.

Co-produced by Chris Stein and Fab Five Freddy, the soundtrack defied the usual breakbeat format. Instead, it crafted a distinctive sonic palette — gritty and freeform, bursting with recurring motifs, streetwise dialogue, and raw party energy. Drums come courtesy of Lenny ‘Ferrari’ Ferraro, a Vietnam vet and punk drummer whose credits include backing Aretha Franklin and Lou Reed.

Though rough around the edges and beautifully unpolished, Wild Style captures hip-hop’s urgency, chaos, and creativity in its purest form. The scratches, rhymes, and beats laid down here have become enduring touchstones — sampled, referenced, and reinterpreted time and again across generations.

Now reissued with the original Animal Records tracklist and artwork, this is not just a re-release — it's a return to the blueprint of hip-hop itself.
