DESCRIPTION
Mr Bongo proudly presents the reissue of Akuma Ga Kitarite Fue Wo Fuku—the 1979 original motion picture soundtrack to Kôsei Saitô’s suspenseful mystery Devil’s Flute, composed by the legendary Japanese jazz maestro Hozan Yamamoto. Recognised as a "living national treasure" by the Japanese government in 2002, Yamamoto’s decades-spanning musical career traversed boundaries between traditional Japanese instrumentation and progressive genres like fusion, funk, and spiritual jazz.
This soundtrack marks a particularly adventurous detour into cosmic funk and experimental film scoring. Invited personally by producer Haruki Kadokawa to compose the music, Yamamoto brought in keyboardist and producer Yu Imai, resulting in an inventive and genre-defying score. Together, they fused traditional instrumentation (most notably Yamamoto’s signature shakuhachi flute) with contemporary disco, cinematic funk, and abstract atmospheres.
From eerie, atmospheric cues to blistering drum and flute breaks, this is a soundtrack that plays like a musical voyage—anchored in suspense, yet bursting with groove. Tracks like ‘Fuenarinu’ and ‘Kaendaiko’ ooze tension and flair, while ‘Ougonno Furuuto’ and ‘Akuma fuewo fukite owaru’ pulse with surreal intensity and hypnotic beauty.
Based on a story by famed author Seishi Yokomizo, Devil’s Flute follows Japanese fictional detective Kosuke Kindaichi—the country's equivalent to Sherlock Holmes—through a mysterious and suspenseful narrative. Hozan Yamamoto’s score perfectly complements this cinematic journey, resulting in a bold and experimental album that deserves worldwide appreciation.
