DESCRIPTION
The "Blood On Da X" LP by Onyx is released on X-Ray and brings together thirteen uncompromising tracks that transfer the group’s raw energy to the medium. The 2023 record offers short, direct cuts like "Blood On Da X," "Crack Ruined Everything" and "The Boom Boom Bap," relying on concise song lengths that keep the focus on punchlines and rhythm. Onyx stay true to hardcore hip-hop: the production leans on hard-hitting drums, bone-dry basslines and gritty, distinctive vocals that, in the interplay between the remaining MCs, keep locking into an aggressive back-and-forth. Characteristic are the uncompromising attitude of the lyrics and the dramatic compression within short arrangements, which keeps the record’s stance immediate and close to the streets. Several producers contribute to the beats, including Dom Dirtee, Pauly Cicero, Alcapella, Fredro Starr, Lord Nez, Sticky Fingaz and Quab; the only explicitly credited guest is Enwhy, who appears on one track. The production draws on classic East Coast elements and combines them with modern, stripped-down beats, so that "Blood On Da X" clearly brings out Onyx’s signature: hard, direct and unwavering at the core of their sound.
