DESCRIPTION
Maria Rita is a visionary Brazilian artist, far ahead of her time. Upon first hearing the otherworldly track ‘Cântico Brasileiro No.3 (Kamaiurá)’, it could easily be mistaken for a contemporary remix by someone like Carl Craig. In reality, it was released in 1988, taken from her independent album Brasileira, originally issued on Brazil’s Acorde label.
This groundbreaking composition would later achieve cult status through its inclusion on John Gomez’s influential ‘Outro Tempo’ compilation (Music From Memory, 2017), which helped introduce Maria’s genre-defying sound to a global audience.
Brasileira is a sonic journey — a fusion of new-age electronics, indigenous vocal textures, and Amazonian rhythmic influences. It flows across ethereal, experimental landscapes, balancing futuristic tones with deeply rooted cultural expression. Through these sounds, Maria leads listeners on a timeless voyage, harmonizing innovation with tradition.
Born in the mountainous inland of Aparados da Serra, Maria Rita Stumpf began composing music at 14. Her early performances in song contests and festivals shaped her distinct voice. A pivotal move to Rio de Janeiro in 1985 eventually led to the recording of Brasileira, which features legendary Brazilian pianist Luiz Eça, as well as contributions from avant-garde ensemble Uakti and multi-instrumentalist Ricardo Bordini.
Though Maria briefly stepped away from recording in the early '90s to focus on her cultural agency Acorde, the enduring power of Brasileira ensured her legacy would not fade. Rediscovered by a new wave of international diggers, DJs, and producers, the album was reissued and remixed by names like Selvagem, Carrot Green, and Joakim. Maria’s work has since been celebrated at Red Bull Music Academy Festival (São Paulo), Kino Beat Festival, and Dekmantel (Brazil). Her critically acclaimed recent albums Inkiri Om (2020) and Ver Tente (2022) have further cemented her status as a musical pioneer.
Though previously reissued, a conversation with Maria confirmed her desire to keep this sublime and influential record available — something Mr Bongo was honoured to bring to fruition.
This official Mr Bongo pressing of Brasileira is presented in a gatefold sleeve, ensuring this extraordinary piece of Brazilian music continues to reach and inspire new audiences.
