Brilliant funk-soul from 1973. Written by Leon Sylvers III and produced by a heavyweight line-up comprising Jerry Butler, Keg Johnson, and Michael Viner.
As with much of The Sylvers' music from this era, the album has been heavily sampled. Misdemeanor is a truly classic breakbeat and has been utilised by Madlib, Big Daddy Kane, Rodney P, The D.O.C., Pete Rock, and many more. Danny Krivit edited the track in 2007, adding an a cappella version at the start—it's still a big record with DJs.
The Sylvers were a family group from Los Angeles, who found great success throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. While their later hits like Boogie Fever, Hot Line, and High School Dance moved into pop-disco territory, this earlier work showcases their deep funk and soul roots.
