Cincinnati, Ohio producer Hi-Tek’s name evokes images of a futuristic sensibility steeped in binary code and soldering motherboards, but it’s the warm, human vibration in his compositions that defines his impact and sonic appeal.

Hi-Tek’s beat biometrics feature drums that knock like landlords on the first of the month, infused with bass that feels like God moving furniture across the heavens.

Born Tony Louis Cottrell, Hi-Tek sent tremors through hip-hop’s underground via productions for Mood (“Hustle On the Side”), followed by standout work on Mos Def (Yasiin Bey) and Talib Kweli’s Black Star opus, then breaching the surface on Reflection Eternal’s Train of Thought. The undeniable thump of “The Blast” raised anticipation for his solo debut, Hi-Teknology.

Defying expectations to release an instrumental album, Hi-Tek used his debut to display the full range of his creative talents. Lead single "The Sun God,” a sibling to his first collaboration with Common, the anthemic “1-9-9-9,” flaunts whimsical percussion and angelic whispers over a bassline that tiptoes across Apollo’s horizon.

However, it was “Round & Round,” braiding lithe, yet sturdy guitar strums with Jonell’s sinewy lamentations of a love that has run its course, that deejays crowned the jewel of the project. Slum Village, Cormega, Buckshot, and more round out a guest list that ensures Hi-Teknology resonates with the fighters, femmes, and felons alike, from Chitown to Bucktown.

As the world’s relationship to AI continues to evolve, it’s the ideal time to celebrate a perfect example of human synergy with circuits and sound. Celebrating 25 years, Hi-Teknology returns to wax, sonically elevated and thoughtfully restored via Coalmine Reissues, where every detail matters.
