13 years in the making, Mr Bongo proudly presents a joyous new compilation of beloved Brazilian disco and boogie selections curated by London’s disco royalty, Horse Meat Disco. This project — a true labour of love — delivers a tantalising cross-section of disco, funk, boogie, samba, and MPB, spotlighting both legendary artists and hidden gems from Brazil’s vast musical landscape.
Unearthed with care and flair, this vibrant collection features giants such as Jorge Ben, Gretchen, Marcos Valle, and Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti, alongside cult favourites like Zé Carlos, Carlos Bivar, and Luiza Maura. Some tracks appear for the first time on vinyl and CD, adding further excitement to this long-awaited release.
The story began in 2003, when the Horse Meat Disco crew — James Hillard, Severino Panzetta, Jim Stanton, and Luke Howard — launched their weekly residency at Eagle London. That same year, Luke made his first trip to Brazil, sparking a lifelong love affair with the country’s music and culture:
“I had always wanted to go to Brazil since I was a kid… When I finally went with Princess Julia, I was blown away. Since 2003, I’ve visited Rio every year, learned Portuguese, danced samba, and paraded at Rio Carnival. Brazilian music became a universe of genius musicians and styles for me to explore.” – Luke Howard
In 2012, Luke visited Mr Bongo's Brighton HQ to share a selection of his favourite Brazilian disco and boogie 7” finds. A compilation was green-lit — but licensing hurdles and other releases delayed it for years.
Fast forward to 2024: with the expert support of Rio-based collector Tee Cardaci and contributions from HMD’s James Hillard, the dream finally became reality. The result is a sunshine-soaked set of feel-good grooves that channels Brazil’s radiant soul and irresistible dancefloor energy.
This is a tribute to discovery, celebration, and the enduring spirit of Brazilian music — the soundtrack to a dancefloor decades in the making.
