Lord Finesse's 1990 debut Funky Technician remains a cornerstone of New York hip-hop. Released in 1990 as Lord Finesse & DJ Mike Smooth, Funky Technician introduced Lord Finesse as one of the most complete artists to emerge from the Bronx hip-hop scene. A razor-sharp MC, elite DJ, and gifted producer, Finesse arrived fully formed—his debut showcasing a command of flow, timing, and boom-bap construction that few could match. Produced largely by Diamond D, DJ Premier, and Showbiz, the album stands today as a cornerstone of New York's golden era, revered for its stripped-back grit and technical precision. While the original version of "I Keep The Crowd Listening" appeared on Funky Technician, this remix was crafted years later, reuniting Lord Finesse with DJ Premier, one of the architects of the original album. Revisiting the track with the fully realized production style that would make him one of hip-hop's most influential producers, Premier transforms the song into a hard-hitting reinterpretation while preserving the spirit of the original. This release pairs that celebrated remix with its instrumental, giving one of the standout revisits from the Funky Technician catalog a fitting 7-inch presentation.
