DESCRIPTION
The 1967 self-titled album from Mário Castro Neves & Samba S.A. is a masterclass in 60s Brazilian sophistication — a sublime blend of bossa nova, samba, and jazz, oozing with class and irresistible charm. This is an album that stands tall alongside the very best of the era, comfortably nestled next to the likes of Sérgio Mendes, Tamba Trio, and Milton Banana.
Despite its occasional leanings toward easy listening, Mário Castro Neves & Samba S.A. retains a cool swagger throughout. Vocalists Biba and Thaís Do Amaral deliver a relaxed, flowing performance that calls to mind the subtle beauty of Quarteto Em Cy — no surprise, as Biba also performed with both that group and Antonio Adolfo e A Brazuca. The album also features the phenomenal bassist Novelli, known for his work with Milton Nascimento, Nelson Angelo e Joyce, and Airto — a testament to the high-caliber musicianship on display.
A long-time favourite among DJs and collectors, the album’s standout track ‘Candomblé’ was famously sampled by Cut Chemist for his track ‘Povo De Santo’. Elsewhere, ‘Nanã’ delivers a playful, percussive jazz-bossa groove with dancefloor energy, and ‘Vem Balançar’ is a shining example of joyful bossa shuffle perfection.
Although it was originally released on major label RCA Victor, original pressings have remained elusive and highly prized for decades. For this Mr Bongo reissue, we’ve selected the mono master, reflecting the original 1967 Brazilian pressing — ensuring the most authentic listening experience.
Effortlessly timeless, this album carries a warmth and nostalgia that hooks you from the very first listen, and lingers long after.
