DESCRIPTION
Redman's debut album, Whut? Thee Album, was released on 22 September 1992 and is widely regarded as one of the most influential hip-hop albums of the early 1990s. After gaining recognition through his appearances on EPMD's Business as Usual, Redman established himself as a distinctive solo artist with a style that combined witty lyricism, technical skill, and an unmistakable sense of humour. The album features a blend of energetic, funk-inspired production and imaginative storytelling, with most of the beats produced by Erick Sermon and Redman himself, alongside contributions from Pete Rock. Drawing heavily on samples from Parliament-Funkadelic, James Brown, and other funk artists, the record introduced the warm, groove-driven sound that would become a defining characteristic of Redman's music.
Among the album's standout tracks are "Time 4 Sum Aksion," which became Redman's breakthrough single, "Tonight's Da Night," "Blow Your Mind," and "How to Roll a Blunt," a cult favourite known for its humorous approach. Throughout the album, Redman demonstrates his unique ability to balance aggressive battle-rap techniques with clever wordplay, surreal humour, and a relaxed, conversational delivery. This distinctive style set him apart from many of his contemporaries and later influenced artists such as Eminem, who has frequently cited Redman as one of his greatest inspirations.
Whut? Thee Album was also a commercial success, reaching No. 49 on the Billboard 200 and No. 5 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. In 1993, it was certified Gold by the RIAA, confirming its impact beyond the underground hip-hop scene. Over the years, the album has become recognised as a classic of East Coast hip-hop and is often praised as one of the greatest debut albums in the genre. It laid the foundation for Redman's career and paved the way for later critically acclaimed releases such as Dare Iz a Darkside (1994) and Muddy Waters (1996), the latter of which is widely considered his masterpiece.
