In addition to Roc Marci’s intricate rhyme schemes and smooth flows, the release puts the spotlight on his production craft: On “656” he once again handled the beat production himself, marking his first fully self-produced album with this kind of density on vinyl since 2013’s “Marci Beaucoup”.
Musically, “656” is characterized by sparse, loop-based arrangements and a subtly electronic patina that leaves space for individual instruments to unfold; organic soundscapes, gritty bass lines, and sharply drawn synth colors shape the overall sound. Roc Marciano’s writing remains dense and detailed, packed with striking, image-rich lines and laconic wordplay. Errol Holden is the album’s only guest, contributing concise parts on “Rain Dance” and “Trapeze” that accentuate the record’s cool, almost cinematic mood.
