DESCRIPTION
A true titan of Ghanaian music, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley made his solo debut in unforgettable fashion with Simigwa, originally released in 1975. A pioneering fusion of Highlife, Afrobeat, funk, and Ghanaian folk, this album remains a cornerstone in African music history—complete with one of the most iconic album covers of all time. Officially reissued by Mr Bongo and licensed from Essiebons, this pressing faithfully replicates the original artwork.
Produced in collaboration with Ebo Taylor, Simigwa reflects Ambolley’s innovative spirit during a time when Highlife was reaching its creative peak. A major figure in Ghana’s evolving soundscape, Ambolley played with bands such as the Houghas Extraordinaires, Meridians Of Tema, and the Ghana Broadcasting Band before joining the legendary Uhuru Dance Band. His journey led him to Lagos, Nigeria, where he performed alongside Fela Kuti at the iconic Shrine venue in 1973—a pivotal experience that shaped his musical direction.
Simigwa stands as Ambolley’s personal exploration, where he flexed his creative muscles to blend James Brown-inspired funk grooves with African percussion, horn stabs, and soulful chants. From the irresistible rhythms of ‘Kwaakwaa’ to the urgent socio-political commentary of ‘This Hustling World’ and the dancefloor-ready grooves of ‘Toffie’, every track pulses with vibrant energy and rhythmic ingenuity.
A defining moment in Afro-funk and a must-have for collectors and DJs alike, Simigwa remains a testament to Ambolley’s genius and Ghana’s musical excellence.
