The second album from SpaceArk — a stunning continuation of their self-released, private-press jazz/soul legacy from 1976 Los Angeles.
Originally released on Color World Records in a limited run of around 5,000 copies, SpaceArk Is followed the group’s self-titled debut (also reissued by Mr Bongo) just one year earlier. Both albums are now recognised as essential artefacts of underground 1970s soul — raw, expressive, and utterly timeless.
For a brief but dazzling stretch in the mid-1970s, SpaceArk was one of the most electrifying live acts in Southern California. Their sound — a unique fusion of R&B, soul, rock, jazz, pop, and even classical music — created a blissful, genre-defying groove that captivated audiences, from U.S. military bases to Northern Soul clubs in the UK.
While the band wrote and performed over 100 original songs, many were never recorded and are now lost to time. What remains is a rare window into their brilliance — and SpaceArk Is captures some of the finest moments from this all-too-short-lived band’s catalogue.
