The Sylvers were a family from Los Angeles who achieved great success throughout the 1970s and into the early 1980s, with chart-topping hits—deep into pop-disco territory by that time—such as Boogie Fever, Hot Line, and High School Dance.
This, their second album from 1973, stands as one of their strongest. Opening with the uplifting mid-tempo gem We Can Make It If We Try, the record flows through a rich blend of funk, boogie, and deep soul moods. It closes on a striking, hazy a cappella version of The Beatles’ Yesterday.
As ever with The Sylvers, the album is a goldmine for sampling. Tracks from this release have been flipped by Madlib (for MF DOOM), Homeboy Sandman, 50 Cent, Ghostface Killah, Black Milk, Roc Marciano, David Banner & 9th Wonder, and many more.
