A seminal funk-rock classic, The Gospel According to Zeus was originally released on Rare Earth (a Motown subsidiary) in 1970. This reissue from Mr Bongo, released for Record Store Day 2019, presents the album in all its thunderous glory — newly half-speed mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, transferred from 2 x ¼” analog reels at 192kHz/24-bit.
Formed in Detroit in 1968, Power of Zeus became the first rock band signed to Motown’s Rare Earth imprint. Fusing funk-driven grooves with the heavy riffage of British rock titans like Cream, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath, the band produced a muscular, psychedelic, and soulful sound that set them apart.
While the band would only release this one album before disappearing into obscurity, it found new life decades later when hip hop producers unearthed its treasure trove of breaks. Most notably, ‘The Sorcerer of Isis (The Ritual of the Mole)’ became one of the most sampled breakbeats in hip-hop history, appearing in tracks by KRS-One, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Cypress Hill, A Tribe Called Quest, Eminem, and many more.
